Blood Testing

Blood testing is a common medical practice that involves the collection and analysis of a patient’s blood sample. This procedure is used to diagnose and monitor a range of health conditions, including infections, cancers, and chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

This procedure was performed in the NHS after a Doctor (GP) had decided on the best blood test for you. Recently more and more people have chosen to take a more active approach to their health and are using blood tests as a quick and easy way to find out more information about their health conditions.

A person in a blue robe holds a cloth to their nose, eyes closed, as if sneezing or blowing their nose—perhaps an allergy profile is in order to find some relief.

Allergy Profile – £299

Why is the Allergy Profile useful?
An allergy is when your body’s immune system reacts to something harmless as if it were a threat, leading to symptoms like sneezing, itching, or more severe reactions. This trigger, known as an allergen, can be something you eat, breathe in, inject, or touch. Common allergens include pollen, pet dander, bee venom, peanuts, and certain medications. When your body encounters an allergen, it can release chemicals like histamine, causing allergic symptoms.
Anaphylaxis is a type of allergy which is severe, potentially life-threatening and can occur within seconds or minutes of exposure to an allergen.
Testing for allergies helps identify specific allergens that trigger your reactions. Knowing what you’re allergic to allows you to avoid those triggers and manage your symptoms better. It also prepares you to handle severe reactions, like anaphylaxis, effectively.
In allergy testing, the primary type of antibody looked for is Immunoglobulin E (IgE). IgE is a class of antibodies produced by the immune system in response to exposure to an allergen. When someone is allergic to a substance, their immune system mistakenly identifies this harmless substance as a threat and produces IgE antibodies specific to that allergen.
These IgE antibodies bind to the surface of mast cells and basophils, which are types of cells involved in the body’s immune response. Upon subsequent exposure to the allergen, these cells are triggered by the allergen-bound IgE to release histamine and other chemicals, leading to the symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing.

This is the UK’s most comprehensive profile for allergies.

Prostate Profile Test – £89

What can I expect from The Prostate Profile Test?

Analyse the levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), free prostate-specific antigen, and the ratio between them as one way to check the health of your prostate.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Although no diagnosis can be made from PSA testing alone, abnormal results need to be further investigated.

The Prostate Profile (Total & Free PSA) test is a blood test that measures the levels of two substances in your blood called prostate-specific antigens (PSA). PSA is produced by the prostate gland, which is a small organ in men located below the bladder.

Monitoring Prostate Cancer

This test has commonly been used to help detect prostate cancer. It is also very useful to monitor known prostate cancer cases.

This test measures two types of PSA: total PSA and free PSA. Total PSA refers to the overall amount of PSA in your blood, while free PSA refers to the amount of PSA that is not bound to other proteins. By comparing the levels of total and free PSA, doctors can get a better understanding of the likelihood of prostate cancer.

High PSA levels can be caused by ejaculating and other conditions, such as a benignly enlarged prostate or inflammation of the prostate.

You need to wait 48 hours after ejaculation before testing to avoid getting a high level due to this.

It is important to remember that this test is not very reliable. It does help with identifying cases of prostate cancer – and this is particularly true when men test themselves regularly and see increases over time, however, there are many times when a high level is investigated and no cancer is found, and other times when cancer is present with a normal PSA level.

Therefore, this test is not a definitive diagnosis for prostate cancer, but rather a tool to help doctors assess the risk and determine if further testing or monitoring is necessary.

It is often recommended for men over the age of 50 or those with a family history of prostate cancer to have a PSA done regularly and check for any changes in levels.

Prostate Symptoms and Testing

A PSA test (and a visit to a doctor) will be recommended If you have any symptoms of prostate problems such as:

  1. Frequent urge to urinate.
  2. Need to get up many times during the night to urinate.
  3. Blood in urine or semen.
  4. Pain or burning urination.
    Painful ejaculation.
  5. Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, pelvic or rectal area, or upper thighs.

Antimullerian Hormone (AMH Plus) – £109

Can you share the details of the Antimullerian Hormone (AMH Plus) Blood Test?

Anti-Müllerian Hormone is a reproductive hormone that is produced by girls in puberty and early adulthood. It is produced by developing follicles in the ovaries.

AMH levels can provide an estimate of a woman’s ovarian reserve, which refers to the number and quality of eggs she has remaining in her ovaries.

This information can help women and their healthcare providers understand their fertility potential. It can be used to help plan for fertility treatments to predict menopause timing and monitor ovarian aging over time with repeat testing.

It’s important to note that while AMH testing can provide valuable information about ovarian reserve, it is just one piece of the fertility puzzle. Other factors, such as a woman’s age and overall health, also play a significant role in determining fertility and reproductive potential. A healthcare provider can interpret AMH test results in the context of an individual’s unique circumstances and provide guidance on fertility options and family planning.

If you are not sure which test to order then do get in touch as we may be able to help you.

If you are looking for medical advice about which blood test you need then you will need to  book an appointment with one of our GPs to discuss it with them.

What is the difference between having blood tests through a home testing kit or taken by a professional.

A home test kit uses capillary blood. Whilst it is convenient there are a couple of downsides.
Firstly it can be difficult to get enough blood from a finger prick test so people tend to squeeze their finger  – this can damage the red blood cells and cause the result to be less accurate.

Even if you get enough blood the blood that comes from a finger prick test is capillary blood. Which has a slightly different composition to the blood that comes from a venous sample that a phlebotomist would take.  This can lead to inaccurate readings compared to venous blood.

Venous blood taken by a trained professional is the gold standard for blood testing.  This is because it gives much more accurate results and if you want to have an insight into something as important as your health we believe that you should have the most accurate result possible.
