A home test kit uses capillary blood. Whilst it is convenient there are a couple of down sides.
Firstly it can be difficult to get enough blood from a finger prick test so people tend to squeeze their finger  – this can damage the red blood cells and cause the result to be less accurate.

Even if you get enough blood the blood that comes from a finger prick test is capillary blood. Which has a slightly different composition to the blood than comes from a venous sample that a phlebotomist would take.  This can lead to inaccurate readings compared to venous blood.

Venous blood taken by a trained professional is the gold standard for blood testing.  This is because it gives much more accurate results and if you want to have an insight into something as important as your health we believe that you should have the most accurate result possible.
