Blood Testing

Blood Testing

Blood testing is a common medical practice that involves the collection and analysis of a patient’s blood sample. This procedure is used to diagnose and monitor a wide range of health conditions, including infections, cancers, and chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

Whilst this used to be a procedure that was usually done in the NHS and after a Doctor had decided on the best blood test for you, recently more and more people have chosen to take a more active approach to their health and are using blood tests as a quick and easy way to find out more information about their health.

Blood testing is an easy way to give you quick results about your health to help you make decisions about the lifestyle you want to live.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

It all depends on the test that you order.
Each test is individually priced. If you order through Medichecks or Goodbody then the price of the tests are available on their websites.
If you have an appointment with Dr Cave then he will advise you on the cost of the blood tests before they are ordered. The blood test costs are not included in the price of the GP consultation.

It depends on how you have ordered your test.
Medichecks and Goodbody give you the option to pay for the blood draw in the cost of the test when you order them.
Blood tests ordered by our GP have the price of the blood draw included in them.
Other companies supply you with the kits only and then you will pay our blood draw charge.

If you’re wondering why you should have a blood test, there are several reasons why getting your blood drawn can be a smart choice. First of all, blood tests can help detect medical conditions early on, giving you the opportunity to seek treatment before symptoms worsen. Additionally, blood tests can provide insight into your overall health and wellness, including your cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, and liver and kidney function.

Finally, blood tests can be a valuable tool for preventive care. By monitoring your cholesterol, blood sugar, and other markers of health, you can take steps to prevent chronic conditions from developing in the first place.
Overall, blood testing is a valuable tool to understand your overall health and identify potential health problems early on. With regular blood testing, you can take proactive steps to maintain good health and manage any existing conditions.

On their website you can choose the blood test that you want and they will send the kit to you and then you can have the blood taken by one of our clinical team.

If you want advice on blood testing then you will need to book an appointment with our GP Dr Cave.
Dr Cave will discuss your problem with you and help you choose the correct blood test for you.

A home test kit uses capillary blood. Whilst it is convenient there are a couple of down sides.
Firstly it can be difficult to get enough blood from a finger prick test so people tend to squeeze their finger  – this can damage the red blood cells and cause the result to be less accurate.

Even if you get enough blood the blood that comes from a finger prick test is capillary blood. Which has a slightly different composition to the blood than comes from a venous sample that a phlebotomist would take.  This can lead to inaccurate readings compared to venous blood.

Venous blood taken by a trained professional is the gold standard for blood testing.  This is because it gives much more accurate results and if you want to have an insight into something as important as your health we believe that you should have the most accurate result possible.
