Not Sure Where to Start?

Depending on your assessment and individual needs, care may include:

Pain and injury problems do not always fit neatly into one type of treatment.

For example, someone with a recurring injury or restricted movement may potentially benefit from physiotherapy, Sports Therapy or Soft Tissue Therapy. Back or joint pain could also be assessed through several different services.

The right starting point depends on your symptoms, how the problem developed, your previous treatment and what you want to get back to doing.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care may be suitable if you are experiencing back pain, neck pain, sciatica, joint pain, headaches, stiffness or discomfort that is affecting work, sleep, exercise or everyday life.

The aim is not simply to treat the area that hurts.

Your chiropractor will assess the problem, explain what may be contributing to your symptoms and discuss an appropriate plan to help you move forward.

What Can Chiropractic Care Include?

Depending on your assessment and individual needs, treatment may include:

  • spinal manipulation
  • joint mobilisation
  • soft tissue techniques
  • therapeutic exercises
  • rehabilitation
  • posture and movement advice
  • lifestyle advice
  • self-help guidance

The initial chiropractic consultation allows time for assessment, explanation, treatment where appropriate and development of an individual treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Hands-on Assessment, Treatment & Rehabilitation

Pain, injuries and movement problems do not always belong to one particular type of practitioner.

At Total Health West Berkshire, our osteopaths, physiotherapists, sports therapists, and soft tissue specialists can all work with musculoskeletal problems.

Although their training and approaches differ, your care may include a combination of:

  • assessment
  • hands-on treatment
  • movement advice
  • strengthening
  • mobility work
  • rehabilitation
  • exercise programmes
  • support returning to normal activity, work or sport

The right option depends on the nature of the problem and what you want to achieve.

  • recurring injuries
  • reduced strength or mobility

Steroid Injections & Medical Pain Support

Sometimes pain or restricted movement may have an inflammatory component where medical assessment and treatment should be considered.

Total Health West Berkshire offers a GP-led steroid injection service for selected musculoskeletal conditions.

A consultation is required first so that the doctor can assess the problem and determine whether a steroid injection is appropriate.

Steroid Injections

Steroid injections may be considered for selected cases involving:

  • arthritis
  • bursitis
  • tendonitis
  • frozen shoulder
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Morton's neuroma
  • trigger finger
  • knee arthritis or knee pain
  • selected sports-related musculoskeletal problems

Steroid injections are not suitable for every type of pain or injury.

Where appropriate, an injection may form one part of a wider treatment or rehabilitation plan.

Foot, Gait & Orthotic Support

The way your feet move can sometimes influence discomfort elsewhere in the body.

If you are experiencing recurring foot pain or discomfort affecting your knees, hips or movement, assessment of your feet and gait may help identify whether additional support would be useful.

Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics are bespoke insoles designed around your feet and the support you require.

They may be considered for people experiencing:

  • plantar fasciitis
  • recurring foot pain
  • knee pain
  • hip discomfort
  • discomfort during activity
  • problems when walking or standing
  • joint strain that may be affected by foot mechanics

The service includes GaitScan analysis, assessment, fitting and review.

There is also a free orthotics chat for people who are unsure whether custom orthotics may be appropriate.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the use of fine needles at specific points on the body, with treatment tailored to the individual.

It may be considered by people looking for support with selected pain conditions and long-term symptoms.

Acupuncture for Pain

Acupuncture may be used to support people experiencing:

  • headaches
  • migraine
  • chronic low back pain
  • neck pain
  • chronic neck pain
  • TMD / TMJ pain
  • osteoarthritis-related knee pain

Acupuncture may be used on its own or alongside other approaches to pain, treatment and rehabilitation.
