Our Talking Therapists

Mette Whittaker

Mette Whittikar (She/Hers)

Chartered & registered Forensic Psychologist & EMDR Therapist

I am a chartered and registered Psychologist, and EMDR therapist, with over 20 years experience in providing evidence-based therapeutic services, including CBT and EMDR, to adolescents and adults experiencing life problems and psychological difficulties, such as anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, low self-esteem, anger, sexualised and sexually harmful behaviours and other emotional and behavioural difficulties.

I believe that everyone has the ability to take charge of their own recovery, and therefore I work collaboratively with each client to give them the tools needed to lead healthier and happier lives.

I have a particular interest in working with young people, including those in care and those with multiple and complex needs. I use a person-centered approach individualised to their specific needs. This might include the use of creative approaches, CBT, REBT, behaviour focused interventions, EMDR, psychoeducation, DDP informed practice and mindfulness.

I recognise that without an experienced sense of safety and connection, changing mental health is unlikely and I therefore strive to work with each client to find an approach that works for them.

I also undertake supervision of other professionals such as residential staff, YOS Workers, foster carers, therapists and trainee forensic psychologists.

I offer both short and long-term therapy within a warm and safe environment. I am passionate about the work I do and committed to helping people explore their thoughts and emotions so they can gain insight, build confidence and take positive steps towards healthier and happier lives.

I offer a comprehensive and tailored approach to therapy, recognising that each person’s experiences, challenges and strengths are unique. My practice is grounded in open and honest communication, constructive feedback and the sharing of my professional knowledge in a way that feels accessible and empowering. I adhere fully to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct, and I am experienced in managing highly complex and sensitive situations with care, professionalism and compassion. I place great importance on clear communication with clients and, where appropriate, their families, while maintaining accurate clinical records and working collaboratively with other professionals and external agencies.

My therapeutic work is evidence-based and patient-centred. I am empathetic in my approach and strive to create a confidential, non-judgmental space where clients feel heard, understood and supported. I work collaboratively with each person to help them develop practical techniques, strategies and skills to manage their difficulties and build resilience. I use a structured, goal-oriented approach to therapy that helps individuals identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours, supporting meaningful and lasting change.

Taking the first step to seek help is not always easy. You may be struggling with anxiety, family/relationship issues or be experiencing sad or depressed feelings and thoughts.

I strive to offer confidential, non judgemental counselling where you can be heard and understood. Talking about and exploring your emotions and feelings will help you come to your own conclusions and empower you to take your next steps in life.

I am BACP Registered Counsellor and work with a Humanistic and Integrative approach. I have experience of offering counselling to both adults and young people.

I have worked with clients who have had a range of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, issues in relation to gender and sexuality alongside clients who have experienced trauma and experienced loss.

I also have a wealth of experience and understanding of working with young people with a diverse range of issues; including bullying; school/college issues; confidence building; difficulties coping with relationships.

I have a passion for working with people which aims to help my clients to process and understand their feelings. I believe that enabling a client to voice their difficulties and work through any issues that arise from these in a confidential and non-judgement relationship with a counsellor enables them to heal and move forward in their lives.

I offer a warm and down to earth approach which is supportive and within a safe space for short or long term therapeutic counselling.

The first counselling session together is an opportunity to talk about the issues you bring to counselling and what you would like to work on. This is an opportunity for you, to find out more about the way I work and together we can decide if we are the right “fit”.

There is a little paperwork to do in this first session, as I take some basic details from you and ask you a few questions about your general health, mental health and wellbeing.

There is no obligation to continue after this first session if you feel I am not the right person for you to work with.

I can help with Abuse, ADD / ADHD, AIDS/HIV, Anger management, Anxiety, Cancer, Child related issues, Cultural issues, Depression, Disability, Health related issues, Identity issues, LGBTQ+ counselling, Loss, Menopause, Redundancy, Relationships, Self-esteem, Sexual identity, Sexuality, Stress, Trauma, Women’s issues, Work related issues.
