When Would I Choose To Have A Ring Pessary Fitted?

A ring pessary is often recommended for women experiencing symptoms related to pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it may be worth considering a ring pessary:

1. Symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

  • Vaginal Pressure or Bulging: A sensation of heaviness, fullness, or a visible bulge in the vaginal area.
  • Pelvic Discomfort: A feeling of dragging or discomfort, especially after standing or physical activity.
  • Difficulty Emptying the Bladder or Bowels: Issues with urination or bowel movements, often linked to the prolapse pressing on nearby organs.
  • Pain or Discomfort During Intimacy: Pelvic prolapse can sometimes cause discomfort during sexual activity.

2. Urinary Incontinence or Retention

  • Stress Incontinence: Leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, or exercising.
  • Frequent Urination or Urgency: The constant need to urinate or difficulty holding it.
  • Urinary Retention: Struggling to fully empty your bladder.

3. Limited Treatment Options

  • If surgery isn’t a preferred or viable option due to personal choice, medical conditions, or age, a ring pessary provides a non-surgical alternative.

4. Postpartum or Menopausal Changes

  • After childbirth or due to hormonal changes during menopause, pelvic muscles can weaken, leading to symptoms that a pessary may help manage.

5. Symptoms Worsened by Physical Activity

  • If your symptoms become more pronounced during exercise, lifting heavy objects, or prolonged standing, a pessary may provide extra support to relieve discomfort.

6. Desire for Non-Invasive Treatment

  • Women who prefer to avoid surgery or are seeking temporary relief while exploring other options may benefit from a ring pessary.

What Happens In A Ring Pessary Advice And Fitting Appointment?
