Sports Massage & Soft Tissue Therapy in Berkshire
Sports massage is a targeted, hands-on treatment designed to reduce pain, release muscle tension and improve the way your body moves.
At Total Health West Berkshire, our sports therapists work with a wide range of clients – from runners, gym-goers and active individuals through to people dealing with postural strain, work-related tension or ongoing physical discomfort.
While sports massage is often associated with athletes, treatment is just as valuable for anyone experiencing pain, stiffness, restricted movement or muscular imbalance. If you’re exploring our wider massage treatments in Berkshire, sports massage is often the best place to start for pain, tightness or recovery.
How Sports Massage Can Help
- neck, shoulder and lower back pain
- tight muscles and reduced flexibility
- work-related postural strain
- sports injuries and overuse issues
- restricted movement and joint stiffness
- muscle recovery following exercise or training
Treatment is always tailored to the individual, with a focus on identifying the underlying cause rather than simply treating symptoms. For more complex injuries, sports massage may work particularly well alongside physiotherapy, osteopathy, or chiropractic care, depending on what your body needs.
What Makes Soft Tissue Therapy Different?
Sports massage is often the starting point, but for some clients, a more clinical approach is needed.
Soft tissue therapy combines hands-on treatment with movement assessment, rehabilitation guidance and longer-term treatment planning.
This allows us to not only relieve pain and tension but also address movement patterns, muscular imbalances, or lifestyle factors contributing to the issue. This more clinical approach reflects standards recognised by the Sports Massage Association.
Research published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine continues to highlight the importance of movement, recovery and musculoskeletal health in long-term physical wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between sports massage and soft tissue therapy?
Sports massage focuses on reducing muscle tension, improving recovery and helping the body move more comfortably. It’s often used for tight muscles, training recovery and general muscular discomfort.
Soft tissue therapy takes things a step further by combining hands-on treatment with movement assessment, rehabilitation advice and a more clinical approach to identifying the underlying cause of pain or restriction.
In simple terms, both treatments can help you feel better, but soft tissue therapy is often more appropriate for long-standing issues, recurring pain or more complex movement problems.
Is sports massage only for athletes?
No. Sports massage can help anyone experiencing muscular tension, stiffness, pain or restricted movement.
Will I receive treatment during my first appointment?
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement is ideal.
Do you treat clients from Newbury, Thatcham and Hungerford?
Yes. We regularly welcome clients from across West Berkshire.
Can sports massage be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Some clients combine sports massage with treatments such as acupuncture, physiotherapy or osteopathy depending on their symptoms and goals.

Choosing the Right Appointment
If you’re experiencing pain, stiffness, restricted movement or recovering from injury, sports massage is usually the best place to start.
If your main goal is stress relief, improved sleep or general wellbeing rather than pain or restriction, our relaxation massage in Berkshire may be more suitable.
For more complex or long-standing issues, an initial assessment gives your therapist the time needed to fully understand what’s going on and build the right treatment plan.

Our Soft Tissue Therapist
Jenny Lane (She/Her)
Jenny trained as a Sports Massage Therapist and Personal Trainer in 2003 after having obtained a degree in Sports Science and Biology due to a passion for sport, movement and how the body works. She initially worked in a gym environment and for a local rugby team for a few years until she had the opportunity to established and owned her own multidisciplinary clinic in Hook which she owned for 10 years.
Sadly, after this time her husband’s job moved the family away from the area. Jenny seized the opportunity to upskilled and qualify as a Level 5 Soft Tissue Therapist from the London School of Sports Massage and since then has been lucky enough work for multidisciplinary clinics in Bisham Abbey and Loughborough.
Alongside this she has provided Soft Tissue Therapy at several events such as:
- The London Marathon,
- The World Para Swimming Championships,
- The Commonwealth Games,
- The World Frisbee Championships,
- The Soft Tissue Therapist in the medical team for Team UK at the Invictus Games in Vancouver.
Over her career, Jenny has developed a friendly person centric approach to treatment, concentrating holistically on the client and their needs. Together with the client she sets personalised goal and treatment plans taking into consideration the individual’s needs, at any moment in time.
This enables her to work effectively with a broad scope of clients from professional athletes to the non-active, and those with chronic pain or working with the long-term management of conditions.
The range of techniques she can usilise to support her Soft Tissue Therapy treatment are as follows:
- Musculoskeletal Assessment
- Hot or cold stone therapy or a combination of both,
- Dry myofascial cupping,
- Kinesotaping,
- Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM),
- Myofascial Release.
- Personal Training/ rehabilitation
Jenny is a gold member of the Sports Massage Association and the Institute of Sports and Remedial Massage. Additionally, she is currently studying for a Level 4 qualification in Corrective Exercises and APPI Pilates Reformer qualification, both of which she is loving!
Away from work Jenny enjoys spending time walking, playing tennis, running, spending with her family and working on her overgrown garden.
Our Sports Therapist
Dan Elsigood (He/Him)
Sports Therapist
Dan has been a Sports Therapist for over 11 years now. His journey started at The University of Chichester, with a 1st class honours degree in Sports Therapy back in 2012.
He initially started working at a clinic in Swindon called Swindon Sports Therapy and has since become the clinic director there.
Alongside this he has worked with Newbury Rugby Club, providing treatment and rehabilitation whilst also being on the sidelines during gameday.
Back when Dan was a teenager he suffered with recurrent shoulder dislocations, which ultimately led to surgery. It was this experience that introduced him to the profession and drove his studies into Sports Therapy.
Outside of work Dan has a growing young family and when he gets chance, stays active with regular gym training and playing badminton locally. Dan has either played or worked in most sports so he has a good understanding of the demands needed to perform at a high level.
In some ways the treatment approach he adopts is very simple, identify what’s not doing its job properly and put that right. Predominantly a hands-on approach to treatment, with a focus on the muscles and fascia. Combining this with the correct rehab exercises to drive long term change.
Dan focusses on providing relief for individuals experiencing pain, accurately diagnosing injuries, and offering comprehensive rehabilitation. Whether you’re an athlete seeking to optimise your movement or someone looking to address physical discomfort, he can help.
